The Government of Tamil Nadu established Periyar University in Salem on 17th September 1997 as per the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The University covers the area comprising four districts namely Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri. The University obtained 12(B) and 2(f) status from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and it was reaccredited by the NAAC with “A” Grade in 2015. The University secured 73rd rank among Indian Universities by MoE NIRF 2021.


The University is named after the Great Social Reformer E.V. Ramasamy, affectionately called as “Thanthai Periyar”. GEOLOGY


Periyar University is rightly located in the mineral enriched southerngranulite
terrain. Salem is popularly known as Geologist paradise, Museum of Geology
and Singhbhum of Tamil Nadu. The Department of Geology was started as
P.G. extension Centre of University of Madras at Salem in 1984. The P.G.
extension center has been upgraded as Periyar University in 1997.


The Department of Geology is oneof the Pioneer Departments our the
university .The courses, M.Sc., Applied Geology,M.Phil., and Ph.D., Geology
programmes started in the year 2005 with seven faculty members out of
which two of them are recipient of Humboldt fellow. The Department financially
supported by DST-FIST programme with a tune of Rs. 149 Lakhs. The
Department is strengthened with adequate infrastructure and research facilities
which include advanced research and student grade microscopes. Our
Department students and scholars are well trained with updated software to meet
out current requirements the industries.


The major research thrust areas are Hydrogeology, Petrology, Geoinformatic
Modeling, Remote Sensing & GIS, Applied Geomorphology,
Micropaleontology,Stratigraphy and Environmental Geology, Mineralogy,
Sedimentology, Geochemistry,Coastal Studies, Mineral Exploration and
Application of Geospatial Techniques.The Department has received financial
assistance from various agencies likeDST, UGC, ISRO, CSIR, TANSCHE etc.,
and successfully completed several research rojects. Since 2005, it has
ompleted 23 research projects worth of Rs 341 Lakhs.Currently, we are handling
4 sponsored research projects with a total cost of Rs 133.77Lakhs and also
received Rs. 23.67 akhs under UGC XI th Plan and Non-SAP of Rs. 20Lakhs,
adding to a total of Rs.739.81 Lakhs.The department faculty members are
effectively handling inter departmental,inter university and foreign collaboration
R&D projects. Further, undertake consultant ervices with central, state and
private agencies andgenerated Rs. 18.90 Lakhs.Our scholars received fellowship
from several funding gencies viz., UGC Post doctoral(02), UGC NON SAP- BSR
(04), DST Inspire(03), RGNF (02) and a CSIR -NET and JRF.


Formulation, of interaction leads to national and international linkages by signing
of MoU’s, which form the basis of collaboration and technological exchange.

Mica are a group of minerals whose outstanding physical characteristic is that individual mica crystals can easily be split into extremely thin elastic plates. This characteristic is described as perfect basal cleavage. Mica is common in igneous and metamorphic rock and is occasionally found as small flakes in sedimentary rock.

Occurrence :
The liberated grains of monazite begin a journey downslope. Eventually they are brought to a stream or a dry wash. There, the actions of gravity and running water help the heavy grains of monazite and other heavy minerals segregate from lighter minerals. They accumulate behind boulders, on the inside bends of stream channels and work their way down into the lower portions of the sediment deposit. Some are washed to the sea where they accumulate in deltaic, beach, or shallow water sediments.

powder X-ray diffractometer, which is the multi-purpose instrument mainly to obtain
the insight of materials.When monochromatic X-rays (produced by this XRD) fall on
the crystalline samples, the incoming X-rays are diffracted by the plans of the
crystallites give the XRD spectrum in terms of peaks. This allows to characterize the
newly synthesized or any precursor materials.Furthermore, this thestate of art of facility
is useful for the identification of unknown crystalline materials, determine the crystal
structure of molecules using Rietveld refinement, find the size of crystallites and many
more. This powerful instrument serves our research, particularly for material
characterization.

minerals are displayed, in this section and contain a further division of beautiful crystals
of certain mineral varieties.

in this section.

The Department of Physics was established in December 2004.The Department offers
postgraduate M.Sc andM.Philprogrammes. Besides these, the Department also offers
Ph.D.program in various research areas of experimental and theoretical physics. The
departmen has received grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and
Department of Science & Technology (DST) through the schemes Non-SAP and
FIST (Phase I and II).These grants have helped for strengthening the teaching and
research activities of the Department.To facilitate the researchers of the Department,
an Analytical Instrumentation Laboratory is established with sophisticated
equipmentssuch as Powder X-ray diffractometer, FT-IR Spectrometer,
Photoluminescence Spectrometer, Microplate reader, Solar simulator and Cryosystem
for crystal cooling. Faculties also established their research laboratories to perform
research in the areas of Quantum Chemical Calculation, Molecular Dynamics, X-ray
Crystallography, Nano-Optics, Spectroscopy, Biomaterials, Crystal Growth andEnergy
Physics.Based on the research, Department has received grantsfrom different funding
agencies of total tune of 9.43crore. Faculties are publishing papers in high quality
journals; as of now, the totalresearch publicationsof the department is 726. It is worth
note that the Tamil Nadu Government has reorganized this Department as Centre of
Excellence.

Periyar University is rightly located in the mineral enriched southerngranulite Salem is popularly known as Geologist paradise, Museum of Geology and Singhbhum of Tamil Nadu. The Department of Geology was started as
P.G. extension Centre of University of Madras at Salem in 1984. The P.G.extension center has been upgraded as Periyar University in 1997. The Department of Geology is oneof the Pioneer Departments our the university .The courses, M.Sc., Applied Geology,M.Phil., and Ph.D., Geology programmes startedin the year 2005 with seven faculty members out of whichtwo of them are recipient of Humboldt fellow. The Department financiallysupported by DST-FIST programme with a tune of Rs. 149 Lakhs.TheDepartment is strengthened with adequate infrastructure and research facilitieswhich include advanced research and student grade microscopes.Our
Department students and scholars are well trained with updated software to meetout current requirements the industries.


The major research thrust areas are Hydrogeology, Petrology, GeoinformaticModeling, Remote Sensing & GIS, Applied Geomorphology, micropaleontology,Stratigraphy and Environmental Geology, Mineralogy,Sedimentology, Geochemistry,Coastal Studies, Mineral Exploration and
Application of Geospatial Techniques.


The Department has received financial assistance from various agencies likeDST, UGC, ISRO, CSIR, TANSCHE etc., and successfully completed several research rojects. Since 2005, it has ompleted 23 research projects worth of Rs 341 Lakhs.Currently, we are handling 4 sponsored esearch projects with a total cost of Rs 133.77Lakhs and also received Rs. 23.67rsUGC XI th Plan and Non-SAP of Rs. 20Lakhs, adding to a total ofRs.739.81 Lakhs.


The department faculty members are effectively handling inter ,inter university and foreign collaboration R&D projects. Further,undertake consultant ervices with central,state and private agencies and gRs. 18.90 Lakhs.Our scholars received fellowship from several fundingagencies viz., UGC Post doctoral(02), UGC NON SAP- BSR (04), DST Inspire(03), RGNF (02) and a CSIR -NET and JRF.


Formulation, of interaction leads to national and international linkages by signing of MoU’s, which form the basis of collaboration and technological exchange.
The Department has nine laboratories such as Petrology, Geochemistry,Hydrogeology, Sedimentology, Micropalaeontology, Remote Sensing &
