The Economics Department of Periyar University takes pride in being one among the best for the study of Economics in this region. It comprises of dynamic faculties with diverse specialization and interests. The M.A. Economics programme was introduced in July 2005.
The teaching methodology at the department combines standard methods of University education with different teaching-learning systems. The faculties endeavours to preserve the vibrate academics atmosphere in order to provide high quality education from both theoretical and practical perspectives.
The students are encouraged to explore beyond the frontiers of the prescribed syllabus, evaluate economic issues and interact with experts from sundry areas of specialization along with accustomed extra-curricular and co-curricular activities: A unique practice of conducting academic clubs like Pragathi and Planning Forum to discuss and disseminate the knowledge of economics among the students and research scholars. Students actively take part in the presentation and discussion of economic ideas.

The Department Library has 2100 reference documents, and more than 100 research reports. In addition to our students and staff, researchers from outside institutions refer these documents.
The Department is equipped with more than 20 computers with internet connectivity. Both the students and teachers use the computers.
With the funding from the State Government, a Smart Class Room is being established. This will be used for conducting regular classes and for organising seminars and special lectures
The Department of Economics provides six Gold Medals every year for outstanding students of PG Degree in Economics.The following Entrepreneurs have instituted gold medals for meritorious Students in Economics.
