ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of History has been established in the year 2015 in the School of Social Sciences. The Department of History offers two year post-graduate M.A. programme under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) C. Swaminathan, Vice-chancellor, Periyar University.

The primary focus of the Department of History is Teaching, Research and Extension activities. The curriculum of the M.A. History programme is designed incorporating the emerging trends and updated knowledge in different thrust areas of study in Indian History: Ancient, Medieval and Modern, Historiography: Theory and Practice, Tourism to mention a few.

The curriculum makes it possible for students to have comprehensive as well as in depth knowledge in history so as to enable them to clear competitive examinations like UGC NET and Civil Service Examinations and take up administrative, teaching and research careers with confidence.

• To mould future citizens who could appreciate the rich heritage and culture of our society and provide a platform for secular, harmonious society inculcating ethical and human values with a sense commitment to the society and nation.

MISSION

• Transform the Department of History in stages to a pioneering School of Historical Study in South India with emphasis on Research and Teaching.
• To give historical content and professional skills to students preparing for careers in fields such as education, law, religion, international affairs, social service, journalism, and government.
