Welcome

UGC funded Women’s Studies Centre (WSC) at Periyar University was instituted in the month of September 2011. The Centre is aimed to promote and strengthen Women Studies through Teaching, Research and Extension activities which will be breaking up knowledge on social and scientific theories as well as integrate multidisciplinary collaboration. It is a stand alone centre collaborating with different colleges, universities, public and private sectors.

Vision

WSC has a vision of inculcating Periyar’s principles in support of women and educating them against practices such as early marriage, female infanticide, domestic violence , sexual abuse, unequal rights to women and train them for healthy life style.

Mission

The Women’s Studies Centre of Periyar University will elicit representation “For the women, By the women and of the women”.

Field Action

  • Legal Awareness Camp in association with District Legal Service Authorities, Salem and NSS of Periyar University on “Anti – Ragging, Women Empowerment & National Youth Policy” on 31.08.2018 for NSS Volunteers of University Departments.
  • Data had collected from Junction, New Bus stand, State Bank Colony, 5 Roads, Narasothipatti and 4 Roads in Salem for KUPPAIKARAN project under Green Connect – Resource Management Solution.
  • Dr.S.Dhanalakshmi, Resaerch Associate and Dr.T.Kowsalya, Research Assistant prepared a Documentary on “Women and Life Management at Rural India” with special references at karuppur, vellalapatty, muthunaikanpatty, sevapet, narasothipatty, paalmarket, sangeethapatty, kullakoundanur, omalur, settipatty and meiyannur in Salem District from 16.12.2020 to 31.01.2021
  • Mrs.K.Vanitha, Professional Assistant and Ms. S.Kavitha,Data Entry Operator of Women’s Studies Centre has done Date Collection for National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Rai, Hydrabad from 06.05.2019 to 09.05.2019.
  • One day awareness session entitled with “Food Habit Management Practices” for Primary & High school students at Muthunayakanpatti, Salem on 19.08.2019 and 21.08.2019.

    • Legal Aid Club

    Legal Aid Club is constituted to guide and disseminate information on rights & laws for women. The Advocates nominated by District Legal Services Authority, Salem. The total number of beneficiaries so far with this club sums to 1020 students.

    Outreach

    • The two days national level webinar on Mental Health and Quality Life of Married Working Women in India was organized by Women’s Studies Centre of Periyar University funded by National Commission for Women, New Delhi from 3rd and 4th November 2020.
    • A one day Workshop on Gender Sensitization was organized on 28.1.2020 at Old Science Block Seminar Hall for all the Women Cell Members of Affiliated Colleges / Constituent Colleges / PG Extension Centre on 28.1.2020.
    • A one day ‘Legal Awareness Camp’ in association with District Legal Service Authorities, Salem on Sexual harassment of women at workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, Workplace gender discrimination law and Cybercrime Act on 06.03.2019
    • Legal Awareness Camp in association with District Legal Service Authorities, Salem and NSS of Periyar University on “Anti – Ragging, Women Empowerment & National Youth Policy” on 31.08.2018 for NSS Volunteers of University Departments.
    • Workshop on “Financial Education Programme” in Association with SEBI(Securities and Exchange Board of India) organized by Women’s Studies Centre on 09.10.2017

Clustering and Mentoring Programme

  • Dr.T.Kowsalya,Research Assistant, participated on the “National Conference on Challenges and sustainable approaches towards food and nutrition security – A global perspective” organized by Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore on 7th and 8th December, 2018.
  • Second Nationwide Competition to Create Awareness about the “Legal Rights of Women” on 28.12.2018 sponsored by National Commission for Women, New Delhi. Offline competition for Under Graduate and Post Graduate students of University Departments, PG Extension Centre and the affiliated colleges under Periyar University jurisdiction.
  • Organised a motivational session to supportive students for their enlightment on “GENDER Vs ENTREPRENEURSHIP” concepts. A young entrepreneur Mrs. Sruthi Priya Kannan, Head, Smart@Young, Five Roads, Salem delivered her motivational speech on 29.08.2019.
  • Organised a one day Medical Awareness Programme entitled with “Women Healthcare Management” in association with Manipal Hospital Salem on 25.09.2019. Teaching and Non- Teaching staff members of Periyar University were effectively participated and utilized the programme. In this context Dr.M.Subhasini Asok., MBBS., MD – Obstetrics & Gynaecology delivered her special adders.
  • Effectively organised a one day Medical Camp in association with Manipal Hospital, Salem on “General Medical Camp” at 10.10.2019 from 11.00 AM to 2.00 PM for University Teaching, Non-teaching staff members and Students.
  • Organized an awareness camp on Sanitation and Hygiene for female students of university departments on 20.02.2020 from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm at Periyar Auditorium, Periyar University, Salem. Staff Nurses Mrs. Mythili, and Mrs. Sasirrekha from Primary Health Centre of Karuppur provide their awareness speech to University Department students.
  • Submission of Annual Return on Cases of sexual harassment for the period from 1st April -2019 to 31st March – 2020 as per the Perform. To principals of all affiliated colleges (101 Colleges) of Periyar University on 7.10.2020 through E-mail.
  • Dr.T.Kowsalya, Research Assistant, participated on the International Conference “Recent Challenges in food science & Technology and Health” organized by Department of Home science, Indian institute of Food Science and Technology, Aurangabad on 9th and 10th December 2020.
  • Women’s Studies Centre of Periyar University conducted Essay writing competition on the topic of “My mental hurdle to gender equality in my life – (non-fiction style)” to university department students on 17.02.2021 to enhanced gender equity idea for the celebration of the International Women’s Day 2021.
