The prime objective of the NSS is service to the community, while undergoing education in an educational institution. It is aimed to arouse the social consciousness of students and provide them with the opportunity to work with people around them creatively and to put the education they receive to concrete social use. NSS units have been started in the University and also in affiliated colleges. Regular NSS programmes and special camping programmes are organized with specific project in hand and with involvement of local community.

YRC Units have been formed in affiliated Colleges. Blood Donation, First Aid Training are the major activities being serviced out through these units. Students study camps, seminars and youth festivals are being organised through YRC.
Red Ribbon Clubs have been opened in the affiliated colleges of the University. The institution is creating ‘AIDS’ awareness among the students and also public to develop helping tendency and also donate blood to save human lives when needed. Financial assistance received from the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society is given to the above clubs at the rate of five thousand rupees Blood donation camps and AIDS awareness campaigns are also organised.
Several endowments have been instituted in the names of National leaders, like Thiru. Rajaji and Dr.B.R.Ambedkar for a total of fifty lakhs. The interest earned out of the endowment deposits is utilised for granting scholarships to the meritorious and outstanding students of the University in the various subjects. Kalaingar Research Fellowships are awarded to M.Phil and Ph.D.Scholars through Kalaingar M.Karunanidhi Research Centre.
National Cadet Corps Programme is implemented in affiliated colleges. This kindles the interest among the students and develops patriotism towards our nation. Students of Periyar University have taken part in the Republic Day Contingent Parade at New Delhi.
To promote rural youths our university is conducting various programmes. Recently, Sangeethapatty village was adopted and computer training programme was given for school children.
UGC funded Centre for Women’s studies (CWS) at Periyar University is instituted in the month of September 2011. The Centre is aimed to promote and strengthen Women’s studies through Teaching, Research and Extension activities which will be breaking up knowledge on social and scientific theories as well as integrate multidisciplinary collaboration. Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18 and older to exchange ideas with
leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun
through service. In communities worldwide, Rotary and Rotaract members work side

changing communities in 184 countries with 2.5 Lakh Rotaractors.
Rotaract members decide how to organize and run their clubs, manage their own
funds, and plan and carry out activities and service projects. Rotary club sponsors
